I had the great pleasure of personally seeing Nova Scotia native Nicole McInnis’ beautiful hair accessories up close at the One of a Kind Show. Her line of millinery and fascinators called Oh Dina! are handcrafted in Toronto and are made with by using modern elements and unique millinery techniques.
How many ways can a fascinator be worn?
There are several places on the head where a fascinator can be worn. The best thing about a fascinator is the placement versatility meaning that anyone can wear them, you just have to play around to find the spot which looks best on your head/ with your hair style.
Do you plan your outfit around the fascinator or vice versa?
Myself personally I sometimes plan an outfit around my petit chapeau. It usually is the most dynamic part of my wardrobe since I usually am in black attire. Its like the extra pop that pulls everything together.
What is your most popular piece?
I have two collections this season, the Oh Dina! Collection and the Oh Dina! Bridal Collection.
I have found that my most popular pieces in the Oh Dina! Collection have been the smaller pieces like “Jenny” which are hair clips that double as brooches. My clients have really enjoyed the versatility and it makes a great compliment to a blazer lapel. In the Bridal Collection the Vivian has been a major hit.
What’s your personal favourite piece from your 2011 collection?
My personal favorites this season would have to be “Edna” because of the play with textures and materials (ginghams mixed with vibrant green) and “Marguerite” which is an oversized silk bridal flower.
What piece(s) would you choose for a) Meryl Streep (a.k.a Miranda Priestly) b) Miz Dita Von Teese c) Taylor Swift.
I would put Meryl in custom piece with hand curled peacock swords which would add a nice contrast against her hair.
Dita, gosh, I love her. I would do something bold and extremely vintage. Perhaps a black fascinator with freshwater pearls scattered across the veil with glossy coque feathers.
Taylor Swift has such a sweet and quirky quality to her personality. I could see her in my “Patty” feather piece which has lots of bright neon colors with lots of texture.
What is your personal take on adding colour to the bride’s hairpiece (vs white on white)?
A lot of the brides that I am doing custom orders for this season are getting me to insert bits of color into their pieces.Plum has been a huge color for my brides as well as the classic black and ivory. I’m all about originality and a lot of the brides that seek me out for custom work have the similar quest to have a piece made that suits their personalities.
